Marcel Hirscher (AUT), the main favorite for the title, took a clear victory, winning by 0.93 seconds over Jacopo Di Ronco of Italy. Tomoya Ishii of Japan and Kristian Haug of Norway tied for the bronze medal, 1.15 behind Hirscher. Andrew Phillips of the USA finished 5th, while Jonathan Nordbotten of Norway took 6th.

Contrary to the weather forecast which predicted rain, both runs were held in sunny and mild conditions with some wind in the beautiful ski area of Aramón Formigal.

Soon 19-year-old Marcel Hirscher established a solid lead in the first run, leading by 0.50 seconds over the 2nd ranked Jonathan Nordbotten (NOR). Di Ronco was 3rd at the half-way point, 0.86 behind Hirscher. The men’s downhill on Tuesday was the third competition at the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Formigal (SPA). In a very tight race, the gold went for 20-year-old Hagen Patscheider of Italy who was just one hundredth of a second faster than the silver medalist Eian Sandvik of Norway. 17-year-old Jonas Fravi of Switzerland claimed the bronze medal, 0.28 behind Patscheider.

Tying for fourth were Matts Olsson of Sweden and Travis Ganong (USA), just 0.41 behind winner while the 6th place finisher Paolo Pangrazzi (ITA) was only another 3 hundredths behind them.

Today’s gold is Patscheider’s best result in the Junior Worlds so far. Last year in Flachau (AUT), he finished 8th in giant slalom. In the European Cup he finished 8th twice in a super-G within the last month, his best EC results. 19-year-old Sandvik finished 12th in the Junior Worlds downhill last season, his previously best result. For Fravi, who competed in his very first Junior World Championship race and made the podium with bib#20, the bronze medal was an early birthday present, coming just ten days before his 18th birthday.

Comments:

Hagen Patscheider (ITA, gold medalist): “Winning by just one hundredth of a second is luck so I guess it was my lucky day today. I am normally actually better in the technical disciplines rather than in the downhill. Today’s course may look a bit flat but it has some really techn (...)
