SETTING
The Tena Valley, situated in the Heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, affords a rich variety of landscapes. The River Gallego cuts through the valley, which is surrounded by high peaks, glaciers, massifs, streams and gullies and one of the most important groups of small natural mountain lakes in the Pyrenees.
The Tena Valley offers one the most complete and varied mountain adventure sports programmes including a wide range of activities for all levels, from complete beginners to the experienced, for the more laid-back to the more energetic, giving everybody a chance to enjoy the valley to its fullest.
The residential area of Formigal , in the Tena Valley is situated at an altitude of 1550m, at the foot of the Aramon Formigal ski resort, lying only a few kilometres from Portalet, the French border mountain pass.
It is an important international winter sports complex and mountain tourist resort in summer, providing an array of sporting activities and organised excursions.

Formigal is the ideal starting point for numerous interesting visits. Just a few kilometres away at the northern end of the Tena Valley at 1305m,on the shores of Lanuza reservoir and shadowed by Peña Foratata, lies a charming, typical Pyrenean village known as Sallent de Gállego.
It has a wonderful, gothic church, dating from the early 15th century which is home to a superb renaissance altarpiece and narrow streets with stone-carved coats of arms, doorways, romanesque arched windows…. The medieval bridge is also worth a visit with its nearby picnic tables and children’s play area.
Jaca, with its population of 12,000 and height of 820m, is 53 km away. It is the capital of this region known as Jacetania, and a historic county stretching across the north eastern slope of Aragón.
Today, not only is it an important Pyrenean tourist and winter sports destination, but also amasses considerable monumental legacy, which reflects the significance of its two thousand year history. The 11th century Romanesque cathedral was the first in its country, built to strengthen the city as a strategic point on the Pilgrim’s Way. It was at this time that it became the first capital of the early Kingdom of Aragón by way of King Sancho Ramïrez (1077).
Being located near the border, it soon grew over the ensuing centuries as an important defensive stronghold, leaving clear architectural signs, which are highlighted by the Citadel (St. Peter’s Castle), a remarkable pentagonal 16th century fortress.
A mix of the past and present is to be seen in Jaca. It is a town that can resolutely cater for tourism  , permitting easy access to the ski resorts of Astún and Candanchu , not to mention the incredible mountain environment which surrounds you along the Pilgrim’s Way, the ice-rink and the important service industry sector serve to reinforce Jaca’s vocation as the “ capital of the Pyrenees”.
